Citizens can file annual Income Tax Returns (ITR-1 through ITR-4), view Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), download Form 26AS tax credits, verify returns via Aadhaar OTP, and track refund processing.

How it works (Step-by-Step)
- 1Navigate to the official portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.
- 2Log in using your PAN as User ID and your secure password.
- 3Navigate to 'e-File' > 'Income Tax Returns' > 'File Income Tax Return'.
- 4Select the relevant Assessment Year (e.g. AY 2026-27) and Mode of Filing (Online).
- 5Choose your applicable ITR Form (ITR-1 Sahaj for salaried individuals with income up to ₹50 Lakhs).
- 6Review pre-filled details from AIS/Form 26AS, add deductions, and calculate tax liability.
- 7Submit return and complete instant e-Verification using Aadhaar OTP or NetBanking.
Very senior citizens (aged 80 years or above) filing ITR-1 or ITR-4 have the option to file returns in paper format at their jurisdictional Income Tax Office.
